Volunteer Engagement Assistant

About

K-State Extension Douglas County is seeking a Volunteer Engagement Assistant to provide year-round administrative, organization, and programmatic support for the Extension Master Gardener (EMG) and Extension Master Food Volunteer (EMFV) programs. The position focuses on volunteer recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, communication, and recognition, ensuring that volunteers are well-supported and that programs operate efficiently. This role strengthens K-State Extension’s mission by helping deliver high-quality horticulture and nutrition education to the community. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. The schedule is generally Monday-Friday, with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with coordination of volunteer training classes, continuing education, and volunteer meetings.
  • Maintain volunteer records, hours, and certifications in the volunteer database
  • Support planning and logistics for volunteer events such as plant sales, garden tours/shows, kitchen sale, and community workshops
  • Help prepare educational materials, handouts, and displays for volunteer programs
  • Communicate regularly with volunteers regarding schedules, updates, and program needs

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience working with volunteers or in a nonprofit/education setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Computer skills, including email and Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, coordinate logistics, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic programming environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in project/volunteer management systems
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating/evaluating educational programs
  • Experience working with diverse audiences
  • Familiarity with horticulture, gardening, food safety, or nutrition

Other Requirements

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Requires a valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle, and a willingness to travel to achieve program objectives.
