*There are different procedures for animals being shown at county fair only, county fair and state shows, and state shows only.

*Your identification must be complete with no errors by the deadline! Do not wait until after business on the day of the deadline, as I will not be checking to make sure your identification is complete. Incomplete identifications will not be eligible to show.

County Fair Only Livestock: Deadline JUNE 1, 2020
Only market animals need to be virtually identified. Animals being shown at the Douglas County Fair only, as of now, do not need to be tagged with a 4-H USDA EID tag.

  1. Take clear and easy to read photos of your animals identifying markers…
    • Sheep/Goats: I need 5 different photos

                                                    i.     Front of Scrapie Tag. Tag must be clean and easy to read

                                                   ii.     Back of Scrapie Tag. Tag must be clean and easy to read

                                                  iii.     Animal’s side view. Need 1 photo from each side.

                                                  iv.     Exhibitor with animal

    • Swine: I need 5 different photos.

                                                    i.     Pig’s Left ear. All notches must be visible

                                                   ii.     Pig’s Right ear. All notches must be visible

                                                  iii.     Pig’s side view. Need 1 photo from each side.

                                                  iv.     Exhibitor with animal

          • Make sure to identify photos properly. Ear photos must state what ear is being pictured (left/right).*

      2.Send an email to Mallory Meek at mgmeek@ksu.edu with the following information.

                        Hogs:

      • Label the photo like such: familyname-breed&gender-earnotchnumber-pictureview
        • Ex:
          • Meek-durocbarrow-2-5-leftear
          • Meek-durocbarrow-2-5-rightear
          • Meek-durocbarrow-2-5-side1
          • Meek-durocbarrow-2-5-side2
          • Meek-durrocbarrow-2-5-exhibitor
            • See attachment on how to read ear notches. If the pig does not have ear notches use (00-00). If pig has crinkle ear, use that as the ear notch number (ex: crinkle-4)
  • Family name or name of 4-Her exhibiting each animal.
  • List of the animals that are pictured.
    • For each animal include: species, breed, gender, scrapie # or earnotch

County Fair Livestock that are being nominated for state shows – Deadline JUNE 1
Animals that will be shown at the Douglas County fair and nominated for state shows, will need to have a 4-H USDA EID tag. To find out if your animal needs to be tagged for state shows visit the State Youth Livestock WebpageREMEMBER! Registered BREEDING animals do not need to be nominated and do not need an EID tag for state shows (except KJLS gilts). However, ALL meat goats, including does, must be tagged with an EID tag and officially nominated.

  1. Request EID tags through online order form.

  2. Once you have received the tags via mail, the exhibitor is responsible for tagging the left ear of the animal. If you do not own a livestock tagger, contact Mallory Meek. Guidelines for tagging animals is found here!
  3. Once tag is in the left ear, take 3 photographs.

      3. picture of animal with exhibitor.
  4. Email the photos to mgmeek@ksu.edu along with the following information for each animal tagged
      1. EID tag number, specie, breed, gender, ear notch or scrapie #
      2. Email must also include family name or exhibitor showing the animal 

*If you do not receive the 4-H USDA Tag before the June 1 deadline, follow the “County Fair Only Animals” guidelines to submitting a virtual identification by June 1. Once the tag arrives, email Mallory Meek, with the information stated in steps 2-4 for “County Fair Animals that are being nominated for state shows”. All state show animals need to have proof of tag in ear by June 15th. Extra tags need to be returned by July 1. It is unlawful to keep any unused tags. Proof of tagging and completed nomination paperwork is needed before Extension staff will sign nomination paperwork.

State Shows Only Livestock – Deadline JUNE 15
Livestock that will ONLY be shown at state shows, not at county fair. Visit the State Youth Livestock webpage for a list of livestock that need to be tagged for state shows. Tags will be mailed to those exhibitors who are then responsible for tagging. REMEMBER! Registered BREEDING animals do not need to be nominated and do not need an EID tag for state shows (except KJLS gilts). However, ALL meat goats, including does, must be tagged with an EID tag and officially nominated.

*You must plan ahead to order tags! If you order tags last minute, they will not arrive by the tagging deadline. If you have extra tags, those will have to be returned to the extension office by July 1. It is unlawful to keep any unused tags.
